At E3 2018, DICE announced that Battlefield V would be getting its very own battle royale mode called Firestorm, which would be added to the game in March. We haven’t had a specific release date for Battlefield V‘s battle royale mode beyond the vague March release window, but now we know exactly when Firestorm is coming to the World War 2 shooter.
Battlefield V‘s Firestorm battle royale mode is coming on March 25 as a free update. Firestorm takes place on Halvoy, which EA boasts is 10x the size of Hamada, the biggest map available in the standard multiplayer modes. In typical Battlefield fashion, Firestorm players will have a variety of objectives to complete that are dotted across the map, which will reward them with higher-tier loot, weapons, and vehicles.
At launch, Battlefield V players will be able to traverse the massive map with up to 17 different vehicles, including a prototype helicopter, a tractor with a turret hitched to it, and tanks. Battlefield V‘s focus on vehicular combat should go a long way in separating it from other battle royale games, which typically only have a handful of vehicles to choose from.
Another way Battlefield V‘s Firestorm battle royale mode will stand out is its high level of destructibility. Battlefield‘s trademark destructible environments will be on full display in Firestorm, with players able to completely destroy buildings, potentially counteracting anyone who tries to camp their way to victory.
At launch, Battlefield V Firestorm players will have two different match types to choose from. They can jump into the action in squads of four, or they can go in solo. Duos will be added as part of an April update, which will be bundled with the Chapter 3: Trial By Fire expansion for the other Battlefield V game modes.
Future updates will likely bring more changes to Battlefield V‘s Firestorm mode, especially if it is as popular as EA’s other recent venture into the battle royale market, Apex Legends. Of course, Battlefield V battle royale players have to own the base game to access the battle royale mode, and that could seriously limit the game’s potential audience. Considering this, perhaps a free-to-play version of Firestorm could be released at some point in the future.
Battlefield V is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
