Bloodstained Wii U Version Cancelled

Bloodstained Wii U Version Cancelled

In 2015, Koji Igarashi helmed a Kickstarter campaign for a spiritual successor to his Castlevania games, raising more than $5 million to fund the development of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Now, it’s been confirmed that the Wii U version of the game has been cancelled.

“During our Kickstarter campaign, the Wii U was at the height of its popularity, but the situation has drastically changed after the release of Nintendo Switch,” wrote Igarashi in an update post published on the Bloodstained Kickstarter page yesterday. He went on to announce that development on the Wii U port has ended.

“We are very sorry that it has come to this after all your support, but we hope you will understand,” he continued. “We would like to respond by preparing options for our backers, such as moving your pledge to another version or requesting a refund if you don’t want any other version.”

Bloodstained will still be released on Nintendo hardware, as development has apparently already shifted to the Switch. It’s not the first Kickstarter project to undergo such a change — earlier this year, Playtonic Games announced that Yooka-Laylee wouldn’t be headed to the Wii U, and would instead be released for the Nintendo’s new hardware.

Anyone who backed Bloodstained on Kickstarter will be able to tweak their request for a Wii U version of the game, and instead receive a copy for either the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, or PlayStation Vita versions of the game. Alternatively, they can request a refund, as long as they act before the deadline of April 20, 2017. While the deadline to receive a refund might irk some backers, at least Bloodstained‘s developers aren’t leaving fans completely out to dry.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is set to launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita, and PC in early 2018.
