With Monster Hunter World having already hit Capcom’s sales targets for the company’s current fiscal year, there’s no doubt that the action role-playing game can be considered a bona fide success, especially since fans and critics alike continue to sing the title’s praises well after launch. In addition to its gorgeous landscapes and fantastic gameplay, another reason as to why MHW is acknowledged as such a blast is due to Capcom keeping fans supplied with a plethora of fun loot – particularly its franchise crossover armor sets such as the gear inspired by Horizon: Zero Dawn.
Not too long ago, Monster Hunter World made another crossover armor set available to fans, with the action-RPG introducing items that morph would-be hunters into an exact replica of Street Fighter‘s main protagonist, Ryu, which has caused many to wonder what other series Capcom will use as inspiration for tailored gear down the line. With this being the case, we here at Game Rant have taken the liberty of compiling a list of characters from gaming franchises whose likenesses and equipment we believe would be great fits for future Monster Hunter World crossover events.
As if it needed to be said, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is easily one of the best action-RPG releases in recent memory, if not of all time, with the series’ protagonist Geralt of Rivia having solidified himself as one of the finest leads in a franchise to date. Essentially, with Geralt being a monster hunter for hire who possesses superhuman abilities and master swordsman skills, he would be a perfect candidate to explore the New World in Monster Hunter World. The White Wolf has certainly encountered plenty of burdensome beasts in his time, and with such apt experience under his belt, Geralt’s abilities and gear would be ideal to have when facing such formidable creatures as MHW‘s Nergigante.
After having been the main character in a long line of classic video games, the hero Link has undoubtedly lodged himself quite successfully within the collective consciousness, especially after Nintendo’s release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Plus, considering the fact that he has taken part in some incredibly outlandish adventures requiring him to fight a wide range of supernatural enemies and frightening monsters, Link would definitely be able to hold his own in Monster Hunter World. Not to mention, if The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim can work out a deal with the Big N to feature Link’s duds in the open world title, then surely Capcom can for MHW, as his Hylian shield and Master Sword would be great weapons to fell one of the game’s beasts.
Although BioShock has been out of the limelight for quite some time due to the last entry in the series (BioShock: Infinite) having come out almost five years ago, the first-person shooter franchise is still consistently lauded by many as one of the most fun, groundbreaking, and original properties to ever release. This is definitely due in part to the titles’ unique environment and character designs, along with the games’ Big Daddy figures remaining iconic pieces of art for the medium. While Big Daddy gear for Monster Hunter World might seem out of place at first, Capcom could equip the character with its signature drill as a Lance and offer a Little Sister armor set for Palicoes, which would surely attract potential players to the hunt.
With Capcom having already introduced the aforementioned armor set with Street Fighter‘s Ryu, it would be wise for the company to continue looking at other properties it owns for more crossover content, and the duds and weaponry of Devil May Cry‘s Dante would be a great addition to Monster Hunter World. After all, the paranormal mercenary has already had his fair share of dust-ups as a demon hunter, so it stands to reason that he would be able to make quick work of such creatures as the action-RPG’s boss Xeno’jiva. Not to mention, it would definitely be cool to see Dante wield his sword Rebellion or his pistols Ebony & Ivory in MHW.
There’s no question that Sony and Santa Monica Studio’s forthcoming entry in the God of War series is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2018, so it’s not as if the game needs any further promotion. Nevertheless, it’s safe to presume many fans wouldn’t complain if Capcom added a crossover gear set that would turn players’ characters into Kratos, as the titular God of War already has a history of single-handedly taking on and defeating some of the most renowned mythical creatures ever. What’s more is that with a slew of equipment at his disposal – the Blades of Chaos, the Blade of the Olympus, and the Barbarian Hammer to name a few – the Ghost of Sparta would be a fantastic hunter in MHW if given the chance.
With Resident Evil being one of Capcom’s most popular properties, it would make sense for the company to include an armor set inspired by one of the figures from the survival horror series in Monster Hunter World. Of course, selecting which character would get the honors is a difficult task, so we figured as long as it’s one of the franchise’s most beloved protagonists, we would be happy. While the villain Albert Wesker would likely be the most efficient and cold-blooded hunter out of the bunch, it would be more fun to see something along the lines of Leon in his original Raccoon City Police Department uniform. Plus, it could serve Capcom well as a bit of promotional fodder for when it decides to finally share some more news about its Resident Evil 2 remake.
The Final Fantasy franchise has no shortage of iconic characters throughout its long-running lineage of games, but it’s safe to say that the most recognizable is FF7‘s Cloud Strife, making him the prime candidate as crossover material to jump from Square Enix’s RPG series and into Monster Hunter World. Plus, with the size of Cloud’s trademark Buster Sword being on par with some of the gigantic blades in MHW, it would be right at home in Capcom’s action-RPG. And it’s not as if Cloud hasn’t been a crossover character before. In fact, he joined the roster of Super Smash Bros. just a couple of years ago.
As a brave knight that journeys into the depths of the Demon Realm in order to rescue his beloved Princess Prin Prin, who gets captured by Satan and other demons, the Ghost ‘n Goblins series’ main protagonist, Arthur, would be a great choice for crossover gear in Monster Hunter World. Arthur has already faced and defeated innumerable savage foes since his inception, so it’s not as if he would quiver at the sight of monsters like Teostra. Also, with his strong suit of armor and a slew of spears, swords, axes, and lances on-hand, Arthur would give any enemy a challenge he crosses in Monster Hunter World.
Considering the fact that Monster Hunter World gave only PlayStation 4 players the unique chance to nab Aloy’s bow and armor from Horizon Zero Dawn, it’s quite possible that some Xbox One owners might have felt left out of the fun. Should that be the case, Capcom still has the ability to make up for the lack of exclusive content for fans of Microsoft’s current generation console by eventually adding Halo‘s Master Chief armor into the action-RPG. There’s no doubt that the SPARTAN-II commando’s gear would be a welcome treat for many Xbox One fans, and the icing on the cake could even be the addition of Halo‘s Energy Sword alongside the character.
Fans of Nintendo’s science-fiction action-adventure series understandably rejoiced upon learning that Metroid Prime 4 is finally in development, but it’s quite likely that the forthcoming title is still a long ways off from being finished. Be that as it may, Capcom has an opportunity to make the wait feel shorter for Samus Aran acolytes by adding the intergalactic bounty hunter’s Power Suit as a crossover gear set for Monster Hunter World. Samus has an array of weapons that would be interesting to see incorporated in MHW in some permutation, and it would definitely serve as a lure for Nintendo fans to get a copy of MHW on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One just to play as her.
Monster Hunter World is available now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and is set to launch during fall 2018 for PC.
