Blizzard Releases Original StarCraft for Free

Nostalgic StarCraft fans have been admittedly spoiled in recent weeks: Blizzard has not only announced that a remastered edition of the original game is on due course to arrive this summer, but the company has now released both the original StarCraft and its Brood War expansion for free. In tandem with the charitable price drop, Blizzard has also released a new patch that brings in features like Observer Mode, autosaving replays, and some general improvements for the almost-twenty-year-old title.

Blizzard had originally confirmed that the original title would be released at no charge when the remastered edition was announced, but the company evidently thought it was best to wait until today’s patch to release the freebie to the masses. While the patch is mostly general quality of life improvements, it does address a handful of odd-sounding bugs like “80’s Kerrigan face in the loading screen.” Despite the fact that Blizzard is officially dropping the Battle.net name, the latest patch also adds a few Battle.net legacy fixes to the game’s network code, along with a more modern user interface for those who aim to play online.

Gamers can take a look at the official StarCraft Remastered announcement below:

The original StarCraft helped Blizzard establish a legacy in the video game industry. The wildly popular real-time strategy game not only became a global hit, but overseas enthusiasm for the title helped eSports establish a foothold and grow into the thriving scene it has become today. While industry veterans who were at the heart of this like Chris Metzen have now since retired, the property itself has continued to expand with a sequel trilogy and appearances in other popular Blizzard titles.

Gamers aiming to get in on some of the free StarCraft: Brood War action will have to do so from either a PC or Mac. While the original title was eventually ported over to the N64, gamers hoping for a console edition of the long-lasting RTS would be better off taking a peek at something like Halo Wars 2 as an alternative. For PC users, the next few months with the original should prove ample time to prepare for StarCraft Remastered when it releases this summer.

Both the original StarCraft and its Brood War expansion are available now on PC and Mac. The games can be downloaded here.
