It has been known for some time that Pokemon GO developer Niantic would be adding Shadow Pokemon to the mobile ARG. These Pokemon have had “the doors to their hearts” shut, adopt a dark aura, and typically red eyes. It will be up to Pokemon GO trainers to save these Pokemon from Team GO Rocket via the new Invasions gameplay, catch them, and somehow purify them. And now, renown leaker Chrales has datamined the dialogue for a forthcoming Special Research event to introduce these new mechanics.
The Team GO Rocket/Shadow Pokemon Special Research event will be known as “A Troubling Situation,” and this data mine reveals and/or confirms some of the details concerning the event. First, it confirms that the Pokemon GO equivalent of Team Rocket will go by Team GO Rocket, that they will be taking over Pokestops (the color of which will change), and players will have to battle them to catch the Shadow Pokemon.
“A Troubling Situation” is not as long as some Special Research tasks found in Pokemon GO, but it will fall in line with the most recent Jump Start Special Research. It is 3 pages long (with an introductory and closing dialogue), meaning that players will need to complete 9 tasks, with all of the tasks related to Team GO Rocket and Shadow Pokemon, though the exact steps have yet to be revealed.
Based on the dialogue, the first step will at least be related to battling Team Go Rocket and perhaps powering up Pokemon, a common step in research tasks. The second step seems to suggest that players will be tasked with defeating and catching Shadow Pokemon, and the third step will have something to do with purification. The final bit of closing Pokemon GO dialogue is less clear, but it does reveal that purifying Shadow Pokemon will replace the move Frustration with Return.

Alongside the dialogue for the new Pokemon GO Shadow Pokemon Special Research, the leaker also revealed some more Pokemon that would join the list of Shadow Pokemon available in-game. Other reveals have suggested that various grunts would have certain Pokemon tied to them, so perhaps the strongest will be tied to more than basic Team Go Rocket grunts. Yet until the event is live in-game, that remains to be seen.
Pokemon GO is out now in select regions for Android and iOS devices.
